Description
BUSHOONG/KUBA, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
‘Ntsahkishwepy’ ceremonial loincloth with rich geometric decoration. It was worn during important ceremonies, notably the ‘Itul’ ceremonies.
Note: Textiles, whether worn as clothing or displayed on their own, were central to the cultural expression of the Kuba people. Raffia, taken from the leaves of the raffia palm, was prepared and woven by men on horizontal single-heddle looms, then given to the women, who sewed, dyed and decorated the cloth. For the Kuba, the amount of time devoted to creating these loincloths was considered an intrinsic part of their value and appeal.
438x85 cm.
Provenance: Collection of the photographer Angelo Turconi, Belgium/Italy.
