Description
MBUTI/BAMBUTI, Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Beaten bark cloth, pigments. Two pieces of fabric known as ‘tapa’, made by the ‘Mbuti’ Pygmy hunter-gatherers. It is the men who prepare the tapa using a supple and durable bark from a species of Ficus; the tapa is then soaked in mud and decorated by the women. 67x30.5 cm and 63x35 cm.
