MBUTI/BAMBUTI, Ituri Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Beaten bark cloth, pigments.
A piece of cloth known as ‘tapa’, made by the ‘Mbuti’ Pygmy hunter-gatherers. It is the men who prepare the tapa using a supple and durable bark from a species of Ficus, after which the tapa is soaked and decorated by the women. The visual language conveyed by the motifs of this decoration, executed in vegetable ink, was a true revelation and sensation for artists of the early 20th century.
