Description
KAMBOT, Keram River, Sepik Region, Papua New Guinea.
Wood, natural pigments.
Following the arrival of Europeans in the region around 1913, missionaries forbade villagers from holding ceremonies, thereby preventing the transmission of cultural knowledge.
In the 1960s and 1970s, artists from Kambot revived these traditions through storyboards to help pass on ancestral traditions to younger generations and thus keep their culture alive.
This large storyboard from that period is therefore not merely a physical representation but also a spiritual one. It was probably displayed in a men’s house (Haus Tambaran) as a decoration.
54x37 cm.
