Description
ELEMA, Gulf of Papua New Guinea. Wood, natural white, red and black pigments. A rare votive plaque, ‘Gope titi ebiha Kiwai’, carved with a stylised ancestral figure imbued with secret knowledge revealed only to initiates. Kept in the ‘House of Spirits’, the planks are placed amongst other carvings and the skulls of ancestors. Serving as temporary vessels for the ancestors, they also bring good fortune to those who undertake head-hunting expeditions. 89x24 cm.
