Description
Philippe-Jacques de LOUTHERBOURG (1740–1812) Pastoral scene with shepherd, shepherdess and flock, evening Oil on canvas, signed lower centre, dated 1760. H_42 cm W_37 cm Work reproduced in the artist’s catalogue raisonné – “Philippe-Jacques de Loutherbourg”, written by Olivier Lefeuvre, published in 2012 by ARTHENA – under catalogue number 11 and described as follows: "History: Collection of Madame la Présidente de Bandeville, née Marie Bigot de Graveron; her sale, Paris, 3 December 1787, no. 69, (with its companion piece, cat. 10); anonymous sale, Paris, 27–28 June 1825, no. 42 (with its companion piece); anonymous sale, Louviers, 23 June 1991, number unknown; anonymous sale, Paris, Salle Gaveau (Gersaint group), 28 June 1994, (Mes Aguttes et Vassy), no. 23C (sold for 40,000 francs). Related works: - For its companion piece, see the previous lot, cat. 10 - A reverse-view engraving by Pierre Laurent (1739–1809), with the inscription, bottom left: No. 5; Loutherbourg Pinx.; right: Pre Laurent Sculp. ; below left: Dedicated to Monsieur Marquis d’Albertas, Advocate at the Parliament of Provence/Honorary Member of the Academy of Painting and Sculpture of Marseille; below right: After the original painting by Loutherbourg belonging to Madame la Présidente de Bandeville. - An Aubusson tapestry, possibly executed by Pierre Ranson (1736–1786), circa 1775, reproduces the scene from the painting in its central medallion, but inverted. A copy of this tapestry was sold at Sotheby’s in London on 3 July 2007 (lot 85, ill.). Unlike its counterpart (cat. 10), this Soirée has retained its original rectangular format. It depicts a shepherd addressing a shepherdess surrounded by cows, sheep and goats on a rocky promontory. Less risqué in its subject matter than the previous canvas, it was also the subject of an engraving by Pierre Laurent and an Aubusson tapestry that reproduces it, in an oval format and in reverse. The question of its date, however, poses a problem. The expert at the 1994 sale deciphered the date 1760, appended after the artist’s signature, which would make it Loutherbourg’s first known painting, whilst the artist was still in Casanova’s studio. This dating seems unlikely to us, and we favour a later date of around 1763–1765, particularly as it was around 1765 that Loutherbourg painted *The Caravan* (cat. 36), which was also intended for the Bandeville collection."
