Description
Charles SPINDLER (1865–1938) and Paul SPINDLER (1906–1980) D'r Hans im Schnokeloch Wood marquetry on panel, signed lower right. H_107 cm W_171 cm Hans im Schnokeloch is said to be inspired by a real-life figure, an innkeeper from Koenigshoffen, on the outskirts of Strasbourg: a disgruntled customer is said to have composed this song to mock the tactless landlord. The name Schnokeloch comes from the mosquito-infested marshy area between the Ill, the Bruche and the Muhlbach where this inn is located (current address: 6, rue du Schnokenloch). The lyrics of the song were first recorded in 1842 in Auguste Stoeber’s collection Elsässisches Sagenbuch. The meaning of the lyrics is as follows: “what he wants he does not have, and what he has he does not want”. This Hans is therefore perpetually dissatisfied. The song was subsequently popularised by Jules Massenet in his Scènes alsaciennes (“Dimanche soir”), premiered in 1882, then in a comedy in Alsatian by Ferdinand Bastian in 1903, and in a tragedy in German by René Schickele in 1914.
