5. A GREY SCHIST RELIEF POSSIBLY DEPICTING THE GREAT RENUNCIATION OR THE INTERPRETATION OF MAYA'S DREAM TO KING SUDDHODANA
Ancient region of Gandhara, 2nd-3rd century
24 cm (9 1/2 in.) high
The left figure is seated in lalitsana, one hand raised with the palm turned outward and held to his ear. On his right, stands a figure of a female attendant holding a fan. Above, adorned with blooming lotus flowers where a smaller sleeping figure is perched upon. Possibly a representation of the Great Renunciation that is part of a larger narrative frieze as seen in Zwalf, A Catalogue of the Gandhara Sculpture, 1996, pl. 173 & 175. Also possibly depicting the interpretation of Maya's dream to King Suddhodana as seen in Ingholt, Gandharan Art in Pakistan, 1957, pl. 34, fig. 54.
