Description
10. A BLACK STONE STELE OF VISHNU
Western India, Rajasthan or Gujarat, circa 12th-13th century
31 cm (12 1/4 in.) high
Vishnu is depicted in the centre, seated upon an ornate throne in meditation with two blooming lotus stalks curled around his silhouette. On either side, his divine attendants are gracefully posed beside supporting pillars. The sculptural ensemble is framed by an elaborately tiered architectural shrine embellished with foliate motifs and geometric patterned engravings. Vishnu is adorned in a tall headdress and resplendent jewellery, while his attendants wear finely detailed ornaments and draperies. Likely once part of an arch commissioned for a temple, refer to a closely related example of an arched frame for an image of Vishnu from the Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian art (1983.8), in Joan Cummins (ed.), Vishnu: Hinduism's Blue-Skinned Savior, India: Mapin Publishing Pte Ltd, 2011, pp. 68-69, fig. 7. Carved stone images set within individual parikaras were characteristic of Western Indian artistic tradition after the 9th century.
