Lot no. 15
Description
15. A BRONZE RELIQUARY
Thailand, Sukhothai, 14th-15th century
24 cm (9 1/2 in.) high
This reliquary's geometric conical-shaped base recalls the traditional tiered stupa form. From this foundation, the form diverges, culminating in a domed top adorned with petals of the lotus flower in bloom. A similar reliquary with a domed top from the earlier Mon period (7th-9th century) is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (see Martin Lerner, The Flame and the Lotus, New York, 1984, pp.104-105), whereas, the treatment of the annular bands finds a close parallel in a 14th-century bronze lamp from Tak Province in northern Thailand, also in the Metropolitan Museum of Art collection (acc. no. 1991.383.1).
