Description
Berthe MORISOT (Bourges, 1841-Paris, 1895) Le lac du bois de Boulogne, 1889 (2nd state) Drypoint, unsigned. Posthumous print made on pierced copper. (Tear in the margin on the left side). Outside margin: 16 x 12 cm. Literature: Bailly-Herzberg I A request from Stéphane Mallarmé led to Berthe Morisot's first attempts at engraving in 1887. Never exhibited during her lifetime, nine prints by Berthe Morisot are known to date. The artist worked on engraving for a relatively short period (1887-1890), using drypoint almost exclusively. This technique enabled the plate to be engraved in a gesture close to that of drawing. Prints made during the artist's lifetime are little known and not widely distributed. It was the reprint made around 1904-1905 on the initiative of Ernest Rouart that brought his work to light.
