Description
DUTCH SCHOOL, early 19th century. Portrait of a young man, ‘Samuel de S’. Oil on canvas. 47.5 x 41.5 cm. (Restored, re-stretched)
According to tradition, this young man is said to have come from a Swiss-Italian family, many members of which became officers in the service of various European monarchs (France, the Netherlands, England). Samuel also chose a military career and served the Dutch Crown. Appointed Military Governor of Batavia (the former name of Jakarta), and in that capacity the protector of the commercial activities of the Dutch East India Company, he promoted the introduction of ‘modern’ public utilities there, such as water supply, sewage disposal, road networks, etc. He died young and bequeathed to his only daughter, herself motherless, a substantial fortune, which she used largely to support science and the arts.
