Henry Valensi (1883–1960) Cannes 1917 Oil on panel, signed, titled and dated in the lower right-hand corner, inscribed ‘to two hearts’ in the lower left-hand corner 19 x 24 cm French painter, film director and art theorist, Henry Valensi was born on 17 September 1883 in Algiers and died on 21 April 1960 in Bailly. After painting the sun-drenched landscapes of his native country, he moved to Paris in 1899 and studied at the Académie Julian under Jules Lefebvre and Tony Robert-Fleury. From 1905 onwards, he exhibited at the Salon des Orientalistes, before joining the Société des Artistes Indépendants in 1908. His travels, particularly to Greece, and his interest in the avant-garde movements gradually led him towards a more abstract style of painting, focused on movement and dynamism. In 1912, he helped organise the Salon de la Section d’Or alongside, notably, Marcel Duchamp, Albert Gleizes, Jean Metzinger and Francis Picabia. There he exhibited ‘L’Air autour que des scieurs de long’, hung near Duchamp’s ‘Nude Descending a Staircase’. Close to Marinetti and the Futurists, he sought his own pictorial path and, together with Charles Blanc-Gatti, Gustave Bourgogne and Vito Stracquadaini, founded ‘musicalism’ in 1932. This movement sought to convey the rhythms and emotions of music through colour and texture. Valensi thus spoke of ‘sentimental resonances’ produced by the vibrations of colour.
