Paul Delvaux (1897–1994) Beach at Westende, 1939. Watercolour on paper, dated ‘1-39’ and signed in the lower right-hand corner. 52.5 x 69 cm. This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Paul Delvaux Foundation dated 24 April 1986
Condition report: Framed A Belgian artist, Paul Delvaux trained in drawing with Jean Delville and in decorative painting with Constant Montald. Initially a Post-Impressionist, then an Expressionist, Delvaux moved closer to the Surrealists – without formally joining the movement – during the 1930s, eventually taking part in their exhibition in Paris in 1938.
