Exhibitions: > ‘Erro’, Trigano Gallery, Paris, 1977 > Saint Cloud Municipal Museum, 1991 From the 1960s and 1970s onwards, against the backdrop of the Cold War and the space race, NASA featured prominently in Erró’s works. This fascination with the world of space is palpable in his ‘space series’, which began in 1974. His interest grew following a trip to Houston, where he visited a NASA base. As Danielle Kvaran writes in *Erro, Art and Life*: “…in Houston, Erró visited one of NASA’s three centres. He was dressed as an astronaut and placed inside a capsule. He observed the astronauts’ training, saw models relating to solar energy and obtained numerous documents which he would use to create the space series…” This experience fuelled his imagination and inspired works blending astronauts, futuristic technologies and the world of science fiction. Through the accumulation of rockets, space stations and astronauts, Erró constructs a visual framework that evokes scientific progress, the discourse of national power and the mechanisms of propaganda. In this type of composition, Erró often employs pictorial collage and references to historical images, particularly those drawn from 18th-century European painting. Here, the scene inserted in the bottom left-hand corner refers to the painting ‘Spring’, from the Four Seasons series, created in 1755 by François Boucher and now held in the Frick Collection.
