It was at this very moment that the paths of Jean-Pierre Raynaud and Sara Holt crossed at Atelier A. Founded by François Arnal, this revolutionary collective set itself the task of bringing art onto the streets and into homes by mass-producing artists’ furniture. In this hotbed of the avant-garde, Raynaud brought his conceptual rigour to bear through repurposed industrial objects, whilst Sara Holt, a young American sculptor who had recently arrived in Paris, unveiled her first luminous and poetic explorations by creating coloured neon lamps. Together, they helped to redefine the boundaries between art and everyday design. A decade later, this historic collaboration found a natural extension in Jouy-en-Josas, where the newly established Fondation Cartier for Contemporary Art opened its doors. Conceived as a new form of patronage and an open-air creative laboratory, the Foundation called upon the leading figures of that generation. The year 1985 marked the pinnacle of this recognition. The Cartier Foundation commissioned a monumental work from Jean-Pierre Raynaud: this marked the birth of the legendary ‘Pot doré’, a giant sculpture covered in fine gold leaf that immediately established itself as the ultimate icon and visual emblem of the Cartier collection. At the same time, Sara Holt became part of the institution’s wider collective ethos. Her translucent resin sculptures and astral photographs brought light to life at the heart of the landscaped grounds, perfectly embodying the Foundation’s aim of fostering a dialogue between contemporary art and nature.
