Very quickly, he chose his camp, between Cobra and the Informel.” Pierre Restany Born into a family of winegrowers in the Var, François Arnal is a pure, daring and tireless artist: a member of the Resistance, he immersed himself in abstraction immediately after the war, becoming friends with Asger Jorn, leader of the CoBrA group, and close to Pierre Dmitrienko, Serge Rezvani, Michel Tapié… and enjoyed immediate success! A jack-of-all-trades, he turned his hand to sculpture in the early 1960s, then travelled to Mexico and Tahiti, living for a time in the United States before returning to Paris. In 1968, his thirst for innovation led him towards design, and he founded Atelier A, which produced objects created by artists (more than 35 artists in six years, including Arman, César, Annette Messager, Rod Adzak…), his own creations, as well as André Cazenave’s legendary Dora lamp. In 1975, he returned to painting and furthered his research into informal art; he was one of the pioneers to use spray paint on canvas. He also wrote, moving from one artistic practice to another right up until the end of his life: in 2009, aged 85 and never tired of surprising people, he created the iconic ‘vélo-vélo’ pedestal table.
