Peter Stämpfli (1937–2026) Havana Smoke 1998 Acrylic on canvas, signed and dated lower right, titled lower left – also signed, titled and dated on the reverse 162 x 130 cm Provenance: > Private collection, Haute-Garonne Condition report: Framed with wooden mouldings Born in 1937 in Deisswil, Switzerland, Peter Stämpfli trained at the Biel School of Fine Arts, then in Max von Mühlenen’s studio. In 1959, the artist settled in Paris and produced large abstract canvases. Then, inspired by the posters in the Paris metro, he developed an interest in the techniques of cut-outs, montage and collage. From 1963 onwards, he became familiar with the Pop Art world of Roy Lichtenstein and Tom Wesselmann before turning, in the late 1960s, to the theme of the car, drawn to its geometry, straight lines and technically designed curves. It is through this mechanical vocabulary that he creates a dialogue between abstraction and figuration. Indeed, these forms are both geometric and abstract, yet also figurative as they are recognisable. The motif of the car tyre would become Stämpfli’s signature. In the 1998 work ‘Fumée de Havane’, the vapour produced by the slow burning of a cigar is depicted as white angular shapes against a black background, billowing from a fiery red hemisphere. In 2000, he took part in the exhibition *Le Cigare* at the Galerie Flak in Paris, France.
