Description
Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923–2002) Untitled 1989 Mixed media on paper mounted on canvas, signed with a stamp at the bottom centre 121 x 55.5 cm Provenance: > French-Canadian private collection Exhibitions: > Galerie Sapone, Nice, 19 May – 19 June 1993 Riopelle Works 1988–1989 No. 9 Condition report: Framed The 1980s marked a period of recognition for Jean-Paul Riopelle: Canadian museums and galleries devoted numerous exhibitions to his work, whilst the Musée national d’art moderne in Paris organised a major retrospective in 1981, which subsequently toured to the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the MAC in Montreal, the MAM in Mexico City and the MBA in Caracas! The artist, ever closer to nature, continued to develop his painting style. Although ‘isolated’ on Île-aux-Oies, where he had set up his studio, and with the region’s animals as his main subject, he continued to dabble in abstraction and drew inspiration from the techniques of his time, particularly those of urban artists, as this work perfectly illustrates. Through his use of fluorescent colours and the stencil technique, Riopelle achieves a result reminiscent of that produced on the streets at the same time by American artists such as Futura 2000!
