Description
William Mackendree (born 1948) Composition 1992 Oil on paper, monogrammed and dated in the lower right-hand corner 90 x 60 cm Condition report: Framed. After studying philosophy and fine art, William Mackendree moved to Greece to teach at the Aegean Fine Arts Centre and Anatolia College. There he discovered archaic sculpture, from which he drew inspiration in terms of line and simplicity. He subsequently developed a highly recognisable visual vocabulary, consisting of primary symbols and pictograms. His works are characterised by motifs, powerful lines and solid forms set against textured, material-rich backgrounds. These silhouettes appear as modern hieroglyphs, rendered in a minimalist style. In Paris, from 1985 onwards, he exhibited regularly whilst teaching painting and studio practice. His artistic world also extends into the urban space, as evidenced by the mural he created on the corner of Rue des Dames and Rue Biot, in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.
