Inspired by Vesuvius, the symbol of the city of Naples, this work reinterprets the tradition of Neapolitan veduta through the language of Pop Art. Through its vivid colours and stark contrasts, Warhol depicts the power and destructive nature of the volcano, a theme that echoes his interest in disasters and the uncontrollable forces of nature. This series forms part of the special relationship the artist had with Naples, a city he often compared to New York for its energy, contradictions and vitality. “I love Naples because it reminds me of New York, particularly the many drag queens and the rubbish in the streets. Like New York, it is a city falling into ruin, and yet the people are just as happy as those in New York.”
