Tristam (1958–2026) *The Kiss* Acrylic on panel, signed lower left, 41 x 33 cm Condition report: Framed Pascal Dequatremare, alias Tristam Nada, first made his mark as a punk artist on the Parisian music scene in 1975, when he was just 17 years old! In 1980, he founded the Steamin’ Muslims collective (Les Musulmans Fumants) with César Maurel and Philippe Waty; Francky Boy (François Sevehon) would later join them as well. He was also close to Les Rita Mitsouko and enjoyed success in 1988 with his track “Bonne humeur ce matin”, directed by Mathieu Kassovitz and featuring one of Vincent Cassel’s first on-screen appearances! Associated with the Figuration Libre movement (the Di Rosa brothers, Robert Combas, Rémi Blanchard, François Boisrond…), the Steamin’ Muslims were set to shatter the conventions of good taste whilst maintaining an aesthetic connection with their predecessors in the Figuration Narrative movement (Hervé Télématique, Valerio Adami, Jacques Monory…). Their lively and provocative style – direct and often conveying a political message – perfectly matched their punk spirit. Little by little, they took Paris and England by storm: in the 1980s, they decorated the Parisian nightclub Le Palace on several occasions, created a mural at Coluche’s house in 1984, and at The Limelight nightclub in London in 1987… Francky Boy designed the cover for the band Téléphone’s album *Un autre monde* in 1984, and created a mural at Guy Savoy’s restaurant in 1992, amongst other works. The group split up in 1990, but Tristam and Francky continued their careers as painters, each going their separate ways. In an interview for *Paris Magazine* in 1987, a certain David Bowie said: “I dream of meeting this brilliant group of artists, the Musulmans Fumants. What they do is very Dadaist, full of humour. Everything I love.”
