Invader (born 1969) Rubik Space 2005 Multi-colour silkscreen print on paper, signed, dated and numbered 035/100 in the bottom right-hand corner 89.5 x 69 cm Condition report: Slight creases at the top and 3 small marks. Since 1998, the French artist known by the pseudonym Invader has been pursuing a global art project called Space Invaders. Describing himself as an unidentified independent artist, he has made it his mission to liberate art from its traditional constraints, wresting it from institutions to return it to the public realm. His medium of choice is the ceramic tile mosaic, through which he brings to life the famous pixelated aliens from the video game Space Invaders, iconic figures of 1980s digital culture. At the crossroads of contemporary art, street art and gaming, his work spreads like tentacles across the walls of Paris and other major cities around the world. These installations, each one unique, form a global artistic constellation and invite the public to rediscover their urban environment. Without ever revealing his identity, Invader carries out a series of clandestine interventions, whilst simultaneously exhibiting in galleries and museums. Among his most notable projects is the ‘Rubik Space’ exhibition, held from 24 March to 7 May 2005 at the Patricia Dorfmann Gallery in Paris, where he repurposed Rubik’s Cubes as giant pixels to create monumental sculptures. During this exhibition, Invader also explored a new medium: stickers, which he repurposed from their original use to turn them into a genuine creative tool. This work began instinctively, with a few stickers stuck onto his scooter. Gradually, the experiment gained momentum: he covered an entire wall with them, creating a mural composed exclusively of these stickers, before extending this approach to various everyday objects such as computer monitors.
