Hervé Di Rosa (born 1959) *Le Banquet* 2018 Silkscreen print on paper, signed and dated in the bottom right-hand corner, numbered 30/100 in the bottom left-hand corner Louis Angles silkscreen print, published by Anagraphis – stamps on the reverse 70 x 50 cm “Hervé Di Rosa is from Sète. He was born there in 1959, on this ‘singular island’, as Paul Valéry, another famous native of Sète, described it. But Sète has, above all, been a port for over 350 years. Could this explain the artist’s love of travel, his appetite for the world? Since 1993, in 19 stages, he has explored a geographical world, an intimate world, an artistic world, a human world. A journey through space and time. Let’s go back in time. In June 1981, Bernard Lamarche-Vadel offered the walls of his Parisian loft—before moving out—to eight young painters, including Hervé Di Rosa. The exhibition was called ‘Finir en beauté’. During the summer of that same year, Ben invited two of the eight artists, Robert Combas and Hervé Di Rosa, to his gallery in Nice for the exhibition ‘2 sétois à Nice’. On this occasion, in *Libération* on 29 September, he coined the term ‘Figuration Libre’ to describe these artists’ approach more precisely: ‘30 per cent anti-culture provocation, 30 per cent Figuration Libre, 30 per cent art brut, 10 per cent madness. All of this adds up to something new’. In his works, he returns to figurative art, in response to decades of conceptual and intellectual art. He blends all forms of art without cultural or geographical distinction, and without any hierarchy of values between culture and subculture. His works draw in turn on the fine arts and the applied arts, art brut and high art, Western and non-Western art. He draws inspiration from graffiti, posters, comic books, Pop Art, rock and punk, and suburban culture. For several years, he exhibited across Europe and the United States, notably alongside Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. In 2000, Hervé Di Rosa founded the International Museum of Modest Arts (MIAM) in Sète, because: ‘Everything is art’ and ‘Whether it’s a Kinder egg or an ex-voto, you have to know how to look. Modest art isn’t a genre; it’s a different way of looking at things.’ ” A globetrotter, a wanderer, a pilgrim, a nomad, a lover – Hervé Di Rosa travels. Not as a tourist, but like those ‘companions of duty’ who travel the world to meet people, to learn and to share their craft and their art, curious and attentive to others. Hervé Di Rosa does not pit the artist against the craftsman; rather, he weaves together their respective skills into a shared work, rich in cultures, experiences and meaning. In this global body of work, there is nothing exotic or colonial, but rather a ceaseless quest for images and folk craftsmanship found in otherness. No platitudes, no shortcuts, no clichés, but a particular focus on resisting the standardisation of cultures, a deep desire for exchange, and a cultural diversity that is both sought after and valued. From Sofia to Kumasi, from Porto-Novo to Patrimonio, from Havana to Seville, from Tel Aviv to Miami, from Durban to Mexico City, from Binh-Duong to Tunis, from Paris Nord to Little Haiti, from Foumban to Réunion, from Addis Ababa to Lisbon, using canvas, paint, telephone cables, lacquer, sequins, embroidery, stones, bronze, gold, earth, wood, shells, ceramics, silver, tanned hides, glass, paper, watercolour, beads… with the help of the finest craftspeople, Hervé Di Rosa patiently and generously continues the work he began several decades ago, perhaps at the port of Sète.
