Description
JonOne (born in 1963) Lessons, from the ‘Poetry in Motion’ series, 2019 Ink, oil pastel and pastel on paper mounted on canvas, signed, titled and dated on the reverse 152 x 195 cm Condition report: Framed ‘I had no formal art education. When I was tagging trains in New York, I couldn’t have imagined that one day I’d be expressing myself on canvas. What really got me into tagging was seeing others painting graffiti all over the city. The school I went to was very strict. And so boring! I remember that back then, the people on the streets had freedom. I didn’t want what America was offering me: a job, a smart suit and a nice house. I met A-One (Anthony Clark, 1964–2001). He used to hang out with Jean-Michel Basquiat (Brooklyn, New York, 22 December 1960 – 12 August 1988). A-One was the link between the streets and the art world. He’d travel to Europe and come back with loads of money, simply thanks to his art. I’d listen to his travel tales and my eyes would sparkle with envy. Back then in New York, I was like many people today: I used to hang about outside my block of flats. In those days, I didn’t venture beyond my neighbourhood either. Thanks to A-One, I started visiting exhibitions and broadening my understanding of what was happening in that world. I started taking my work seriously, no longer seeing it as vandalism but simply as art.”
