Description
NOTE : ONLY VALID FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION. French school of the First Empire period, after Robert LEFÈVRE (1756-1830). Bust portrait of the Empress Josephine. Rectangular miniature painted on ivory, unsigned, after the full-length portrait in the Museo Napoleonico in Rome (inv. mn 22) painted by Lefèvre in 1805, of which Malmaison has a bust version. Good condition, with minor paint chips at the bottom. In a rectangular frame in blackened wood and gilt bronze ring, to hang. On the back is a gilt brass plate engraved with the dedication: "Joséphine de Beauharnais / Don de la Reine Hortense à sa dame d'honneur Madame Salvage / Figurant dans le contrat de mariage de Madame de Peschkoff à Vernon, descendante directe de Madame Salvage". H. 6.5 x W. 6.1 cm. Frame: H. 12.5 x W. 11.5 cm. Expert: Maxime Charron, Paris. Sold with Cites certificate. Provenance - Hortense de Beauharnais (1783-1837), Queen of Holland, daughter of Empress Josephine and mother of Napoleon III. - Given to her lady-in-waiting Baroness Salvage (1785-1854). - Then by descent, to Madame de Peschkoff. - Private Belgian collection. History Anne Antoinette Benoite, Baroness Salvage de Faverolles, née Dumorey (1785-1854) was introduced to Queen Hortense by Madame de Récamier. She became a great friend of Louis Bonaparte's wife and her lady-in-waiting. She contributed to the early education of the future Napoleon III. She died on 1 March 1854, having bequeathed a large part of her estate to the Emperor.
