This form of three-dimensional rod puppet theatre is inextricably linked to its sacred dimension: the suffix ‘yang’ refers directly to the supernatural world. The performances, orchestrated by the *dalang* — a master performer who is at once puppeteer, storyteller and spiritual intermediary — are thus imbued with magical powers intended to uphold order.
