WALASSE TING (1929–2010), Colour lithograph, signed and numbered (145/200) in the lower left margin. Depicting a blonde, nude woman on a bed with a floral pattern. In the background is a bouquet. 67 cm x 93 cm (view size) WALASSE TING (1929–2010) was a Chinese artist who grew up in Shanghai before the civil war and political upheavals drove him to Hong Kong and then, in the early 1950s, to Europe. As a Chinese immigrant in post-war Paris, he became acquainted with artists from the CoBrA group, notably Karel Appel, Pierre Alechinsky and Asger Jorn. This group championed a spontaneous style of painting, free from academic rules, and this approach had a lasting influence on Ting. He also discovered the work of Matisse and his use of colour. However, he did not actually become a member of CoBrA. He socialised with these artists, but without formally joining the movement, thereby retaining a certain freedom that characterised his career. In the late 1950s, TING moved to New York. The city was buzzing with creative energy, caught between the emerging Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. He became friends with Sam FRANCIS and went on to develop his own hybrid artistic language, blending Eastern and Western influences, by superimposing the memory of the calligraphic gestures he had learnt as a child in China with colours, each more vivid than the last, echoing his time spent in the West.
