Description
FRANCE 1784–1785 An oval-shaped snuffbox in 750°/°° yellow gold with a hinged lid, the rim chiselled with four alternating panels of crossed palm fronds, in a classical Louis XVI style featuring medallions, striations and twisted bands repeated on the lid, framing a central medallion depicting a scene of faux ruins and a peacock. Master goldsmith: François-Nicolas CHEVANCE, admitted to the guild in 1780, an apprentice to the goldsmith Pointreau, one of whose snuffboxes is held in the Louvre’s collections. H.: 2.3 cm – L.: 7 cm – W.: 5.2 cm Net weight: 71.3 g
