Description
Esther Fainting before Ahasuerus Antwerp tapestry in wool and silk. 17th century. Part of a series depicting the Story of Esther. Probably modelled on a work by Abraham van Diepenbeeck (1596–1675). Beautiful Baroque border decorated with thick garlands of flowers, putti and vases of flowers. H.: 323 cm – W.: 518 cm (Signs of wear, damage, missing sections). Iconography: Esther, the new wife of Ahasuerus, has come to see the king uninvited to plead her people’s cause; he lowers his sceptre as a sign of goodwill and the young queen faints with emotion. This lot comes from the grand staircase of the Château d’Arcangues. Dismantling and handling are the responsibility and at the expense of the buyer.
