Description
Bernard VAN ORLEY (c. 1488–1541) (after) The Story of Job, Mealtime Scene Brussels tapestry in wool and silk. 16th century, after 1530. H.: 330 cm – W.: 380 cm (Signs of wear, damage, creases). The tapestry comprises two sections separated by a pilaster; this is a type of composition found in other tapestries by B. van Orley, such as the series depicting The Story of Jacob (Brussels, Royal Museums of Art and History). Iconography: On the left, Job, in the background, suffers on his heap of dung, whilst his wife on the right and his friends feast, no doubt noisily, in the foreground. A servant carrying dishes is about to cross the left-hand side. This tapestry, with a biblical theme and featuring contemporary Renaissance costumes, provides an opportunity to depict a joyful banquet scene. The composition is framed by a wide border decorated with lifelike flowers. The tapestry is mounted on crimson velvet. The colours are still vivid. This lot comes from the Oriental Drawing Room at the Château d’Arcangues. The buyer is responsible for and must bear the costs of dismantling and handling the item.
