This bed has accommodated several distinguished guests. In 1808, when Napoleon I came to install his brother Joseph on the Spanish throne, he took up residence at the Château de Marracq in Bayonne. At the time, the château was completely unfurnished. To accommodate Napoleon, furniture was requisitioned from homes in the region, and the bed we are presenting is said to have been requisitioned for the Emperor’s nights there.
In 1813, the Duke of Wellington established his headquarters at the Château d’Arcangues. It is said that the Duke spent his nights in this very bed.
Included is a round canopy made of mahogany veneer and bronze, with curtains adorned with trimmings
19th century.
Dismantling and handling are the responsibility of, and at the expense of, the buyer.
This lot comes from the Empire-style bedroom at the Château d’Arcangues
