Mapuche, Chile Sceptre 1200–1700 AD Made of fine-grained grey-green hardstone, carved and polished, with a hole at the base of the handle, evoking a bird’s profile; the upper tip suggests a beak projecting forwards, whilst the lower tip suggests the curve of an open beak. Their material culture includes objects made of stone, wood, textile and metal, some of which are associated with power, prestige, war, ritual or spiritual mediation. The clava, sometimes called a toki-kura, belongs to this category of objects with strong symbolic significance and refers to a stone object that is simultaneously a potential weapon, an insignia and a sceptre.
