Description
Aztec Culture: Coin known as "Hoe money" Made of copper, in the shape of an axe. Height: 16.5 cm. Provenance: > Private collection
Condition report: Mounted The economy of the Aztec empire relied mainly on commodity money, notably cocoa beans, used for everyday trade. For larger transactions, the Aztecs also used cotton cloth and standardised copper blades shaped like axes, which were widely recognised as a medium of exchange. One such blade could be worth up to around 8,000 cocoa beans. Rather than a shift from cocoa to metal, these different forms of currency coexisted and facilitated trade across Mesoamerica.
