Description
Nariño culture, Capuli, Colombia-Ecuador border Coquero (Cauca chewer) 800–1100 AD BC. In red terracotta, depicting a Coquero (Cauca chewer) seated on a small stool, hands on his knees, his body covered in geometric patterns painted in black. His cheek is swollen with Cauca betel nut, used to induce a trance and establish a connection with the spirits.
