Description
Syro-Phoenician style Beads [2] Probably 19th century In polychrome glass, featuring two small stylised heads surmounted by suspension loops H. 3 cm Provenance: > Collection of Pierre (1900–1993) and Claude (1929–2018) Vérité, Paris The Phoenicians played a major role in Mediterranean trade during the 1st millennium BC. Small polychrome glass objects (beads, pendants, amulets, human heads or masks) circulated in the context of trade, adornment and funerary practices.
Head-shaped pendants belong to a category of amulet jewellery.
They could be worn on a necklace, sewn onto clothing or placed in a tomb. Their function was not limited to ornamentation. The human or demonic head often serves an apotropaic purpose: the face, the eyes, the colour and the brilliance of the glass
can protect the wearer, ward off the evil eye or signify status.
