Description
Léon Perrin (1886–1978) Female Torso In plaster with a marble-effect patina, resting on a painted wooden plinth H. 122 cm Provenance: > Gallery near Neuchâtel, Switzerland Léon Perrin was a Swiss sculptor born in Le Locle to a modest background. He trained at the École d’art de La Chaux-de-Fonds, initially as an engraver and chaser, then in the advanced course led by Charles L’Eplattenier. His training was complemented by several study trips around Europe, notably with Le Corbusier, which influenced his critical view of contemporary art. In 1909, he co-founded the Ateliers d’Arts Réunis with Georges Aubert and Le Corbusier, with the aim of bringing art and industry closer together. He also played a part in the creation of the Nouvelle Section of the School of Art and the association ‘L’Œuvre’. Alongside his artistic career, he taught drawing and modelling for many years in La Chaux-de-Fonds. His work consists mainly of sculptures (busts, bas-reliefs, monuments), but also includes a varied body of graphic work (drawings, watercolours, landscapes, portraits). He exhibited in Switzerland and abroad and received several awards, notably in Paris and Charleroi. Towards the end of his life, he donated around a hundred works to the canton of Neuchâtel. A foundation established in his honour continues to organise exhibitions to this day.
