Luba-Hemba culture, Congo 19th-century Kabeja double statuette Hardwood with a beautiful lacquered black patina and a beaded necklace, depicting a male and female couple standing back to back. An offering vessel is placed at the top. H. 32 cm Provenance: > Former Parisian collection Bibliography: Robbins W. and Nooter N. African Art in American Collections, A Schiffer Book, 2004, p.461, fig. 1189, similar model. Condition report: Mounted This type of statuette was used to honour the clan’s founding ancestors. The beautiful geometric lines reveal the Songye influence in this Luba sculpture.
