Asmat culture, Irian Jaya, Papua New Guinea Mask Late 19th – early 20th century Made from woven woven fibres, natural pigments and wood, depicting a human face wearing wooden spectacles adorned with bird heads, as well as a nose ornament. This type of mask was used during the initiation rites of young Asmat men and represented the clan’s founding ancestors. They were used for the festivals known as Puri or Puriter Pokumbui.
