Description
20th-century Japanese school Woman in front of the house Oil on canvas signed 'Kaji?' and bearing a date mark in the lower right-hand corner, with annotations in Japanese on the reverse: '17 September 1933 in France, in a house in the Loire, Ueda to Monsieur de Baque (or Becq?)” 27 x 34 cm Condition report: Indentation at the top centre The note on the reverse likely refers to Augustin-Pierre Becq de Fouquières (1868–1960), a French diplomat and head of protocol at the Quai d’Orsay, who played a key role in Franco-Japanese relations in the early 1930s. In particular, he received Japanese ambassadors, such as Nagaoka in 1932 and Sato in 1933, during their official visits to the Élysée Palace. In the wake of Foujita and Oguiss, many Japanese painters came to Paris in the interwar period. At that time, he became friends with one of them, who is said to have painted this picture.
