Description
Cylinder seal showing, from left to right, the goddess Lama with the owner of the seal. The second from the right is the king/priest, holding a mace in his left hand, symbolising his divine right to rule, and a bucket and pine cone in his right hand. The crescent and sun disk are symbols of the main deity, Shamash, depicted here as the god of war, in a walking posture, with his foot resting on a stone, a posture of dominance. Hematite. Palaeo-Babylonian art, 1900-1600 BC Height: 2.9 cm Provenance : Former collection of Mr Gaston Forgues (the owners' grandfather). Acquired at auction and from Vinchon between 1960 and 1980. By inheritance.
