Description
Two fragments of framed textiles, Fatimid Egypt, probably 12th century
Linen weavings, one decorated with a frieze of black roundels with a red heart, the other with a frieze of foliage decorated with flowering palmettes seeming to include an inscription, with a bird on the right. Framed under glass.
Length: 16.5 and 15.5 cm
Stains and accidents, minor repairs to one.
A tiraz from the al-Sabah collection in Kuwait (LNS 47T) has a decoration very similar to our second textile, with the bird replaced by hares and the calligraphy clearly legible.
