The Kitab al-Mutawwal is a major work of Arabic rhetoric by the Persian Imam Sa'd al-Din al-Taftazani (d. 1389). It was written on the basis of seminal works. The text comments on Jalal al-Din al-Qazwini's Talkhis al-Miftah and explores the three sciences of what is known as Balaghah (eloquence): 'Ilm al-Ma'ani (semantics of syntax), 'Ilm al-Bayân (science of figurative expression) and 'Ilm al-Badi' (figures for embellishing speech). Its academic rigour and precision have made it the reference work in the teaching of rhetoric. The place of copying mentioned in the colophon ("Dar al-Sultana al-Mahbut") has not been identified.
