Description
Border tile, Ottoman Syria, second half of the 16th century
Rectangular siliceous ceramic tile decorated in black under a transparent turquoise glaze with a poly-lobed cartouche in the centre of floral scrolls and framed by two bifid palmettes. Gilded wood frame.
Sight size: 10.3 x 17.6 cm
Small chips, one corner trimmed, tile shortened, wear to the frame.
Provenance :
Former collection of Michael Pacha Portakalian (1842-1897), high official at the court of Sultan Abdulhamid II, then by descent.
Several similar tiles are in the Musée du Louvre in Paris (MAO 2189, OA 6063, AD 281/1 and 2).
