Description
Tile decorated with prunus branches and grapevines, Ottoman Turkey, Iznik, circa 1590 Square siliceous ceramic tile with polychrome decoration under a transparent glaze of a prunus stem framed by two grapevines bearing bunches of grapes. Wooden frame. 25.4 x 27.8 cm Minor chips and scratches, one edge and one corner trimmed. Provenance : Former collection of Michael Pacha Portakalian (1842-1897), high official at the court of Sultan Abdulhamid II, then by descent. The unusual decoration of prunus branches and vine shoots is a common feature on the walls of the Takkeci Ibrahim Aga mosque in Istanbul, built in 1592 (see DENNY, W. and ERTUG, A., Gardens of Paradise, Ertug & Kocabiyik, 1998, pl. 99 p. 177). Similar tiles in major international collections such as the Musée du Louvre in Paris (AD 8074/1 and AD 8074/2), the Museum für Islamische Kunst in Berlin (no. 1889,169), the Istanbul Archaeological Museum (41/502) and the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul (Cinili Kiösk 41/502) are all attributed to this same mosque, a provenance that it is tempting to suggest for this piece.
