Description
Tile with floral decoration, Ottoman Turkey, Iznik, second half of the 16th century Square siliceous ceramic tile with polychrome decoration under a transparent glaze of foliage scrolls embellished with saz leaves, composite flowers and two tulips arranged in opposite directions in the centre of the composition. Wooden frame. 24 x 24.2 cm Small chips, glaze cracks, irregular edges on the back. Provenance : Former collection of Michael Pacha Portakalian (1842-1897), high-ranking official at the court of Sultan Abdulhamid II, then by descent. This floral composition, organised around two central tulips facing in opposite directions, is unusual. This original decoration can be found on tile panels in the tomb of Eyüp Sultan in Istanbul.
