Estimate €800 - €1,200
Description
Ottoman-style ewer, France, second half of the 19th century Ewer with a pear-shaped body flanked by a handle and a long sinuous spout, standing on a pedestal and surmounted by a high neck marked by a bulbous ring and closed by a metal-hinged lid with a bulbous grip. In ceramic with polychrome decoration under a transparent glaze of two mandorles, one with a figure in a caftan, the other with an architectural aedicule. A floral design all around and on the lid, the neck decorated with tongues. Points of gilding enhance the polychromy. A three-leaf branch painted under the base. Height: 35.5 cm Chips at the base of the lid and foot. Provenance : Former collection of Michael Pacha Portakalian (1842-1897), high-ranking official at the court of Sultan Abdulhamid II, then by descent. Although the plant mark on the base has not been identified, the existence of ewers with identical decoration and bearing the Samson mark suggests that this piece may also have come from the workshops of the French ceramist. Examples have sold at auction in recent years, including at Christie's South Kensington, 10 April 2014, no. 237, and at Artcurial, Paris, 21 May 2024, lot 186.
