Description
One side of a double Caucasian Khorjin, Shahsavan or Shahsevan bag, Caucasus, 19th century Wool, sumak weave (sumac, soumac, soumak), decorated with five medallions typical of the Moghan Shah Savan repertoire. The eagle's beak border, unusual for this group, suggests that this work is from more northerly regions, of the Kazak, Kuba or Shirvan type. A similar example is in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (no. 2015.490.36). 53 x 52 cm Fairly poor condition. Wear, corrosion of the black colours, restorations, fraying. Provenance : - Former collection of Michael Pacha Portakalian (1842-1897), high official at the court of Sultan Abdulhamid II, then by descent. - Heinrich Kirchheim, Orient Stars.
