Palestinian models of Christian buildings are significant objects from the Bethlehem and Jerusalem workshops under the Ottoman Empire. These devotional objects, designed for pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land, accurately reproduce the plan and elevation of the monuments on a reduced scale and bear witness to the skills of the sculptors of the Ottoman period. Among these monuments, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem is undoubtedly the best known and the most impressive, as can be seen from a number of examples preserved in museums such as the British Museum in London (OA.10338), the Musée du Louvre in Paris (RFML.ABCO.2022.28.1.0) and the MUCEM in Marseille (2010.7.1.1-16).
The Calvary Chapel in Bethlehem is less common. The Musée du Louvre has an example attributed to Bethlehem in the second half of the 17th century (RFML.ABCO.2022.29.1.0) and the decoration on its removable roof, including a medallion engraved with a portrait of the Virgin, suggests the type of ornament that adorned the roof of our model.
