A large silver oblong writing case, Ottoman Turkey, 19th century
A large oblong silver writing case with chased floral decoration, champlevé and partly gilded at the ends. Flanked by an inkwell with canted sides opening at the top, decorated with foliage on the edges and borders and chased floral composition below the base. Signed Afdal [?] Rumî on the pen box, which is also hallmarked. Under the inkwell, a tughra, probably that of Sultan Mahmud II (r. 1808-1839). Inside the pen box, several wooden calames and inside the inkwell, remains of ink.
